I start by inserting a raster image reference in AutoCAD

I darken it up so I can see the lines I am about to overlay

Using the polyline command, I trace the areas I want to create

I create a new layer, then I draw a circle and polylines again for the world image

Restoring the fox layer, this is what I have.

Now it's time to create the model

Using the extrude command, I create solids for the world

Simple rendering

I extrude the fox at a few difference heights to give the model some depth

All the layers restored and rendered

Now I draw a circle

And create a region as a backdrop for the fox and world

I give the 3D geometry some sensible colors, and the main part of the icon is complete

Now for the border; I start with a circle the same size as the backdrop I made above

I create a couple reference lines and a center axis that will be the height

This element will be the inside and bottom of the ring

I want the top and outside of the ring to be rounded, so I start with circles

Then I trim them down and create a polyline

Using the revolve command, I revolve the solid around the center axis

The border ring

I move it down so the top will be flush with the bottom of the other models

The 3D geometry is now complete

I mirror all the geometry that I will use as the dock reflection and add some lights for effect

The presentation quality rendering is complete

Since I want to add some effects in Photoshop, I am going one step further and render all of the elements separately to get separate layers in Photoshop

Now in Photoshop, I assemble all the different images into one multi-layered file

I add a little outer glow to the Earth

I add a little shading to the fox (I am not going into details on this step; mostly just using the magic wand for selection, and then using the soft edge paintbrush)

I add a drop shadow to the button for the non-reflective icon

Now for the reflection; I create a new layer, then use the foreground to transparent gradient tool

I make a gradient approximately as shown above

Now I set the gradient layer I just made invisible, and select the reflection layer, then I control-click on the gradient thumbnail; which will create the mask shown above

I select the reveal selection layer mask

And I have my reflection

Now I turn visibility back on for the other layers, and crop the image to my icon size (256x256 pixels)

And the reflective icon is complete!

Finally, I turn off the reflection layer, turn the button's drop shadow on, and re-crop for a desktop icon.
