How to create a BartPE source/bootable CD

Important! If you have an OEM windows installation disc, this will NOT work.

You need to either borrow a retail disc from someone, or download a copy of Windows 2003 Server trial from Microsoft. You only need to download the 'First ISO Image File'. If you do this, you do not need to burn a copy. Click here for instructions on mounting a cd-rom image.

Also note; you DO NOT have to install Windows 2003. You just need the ISO image.

Next you need to download Bart's PEbuilder:

{Optional}

If you plan on adding internet access, I recommend Firefox.

You only need the plugin, it includes all the firefox installation files (kudos to Mozilla for allowing Bart to do this!)

For internet access on any computer with ethernet, download the LAN driverpack

http://driverpacks.net/DriverPacks/download.php?pag=l

Preparing the installation files

First extract pebuilder3110a.zip to your C drive with WinRAR or 7zip.

Next, extract the driverpack to pebuilder3110a\driver\Net

At the time I wrote this, these 9 drivers were missing some files, so I just deleted them. I don't know anyone with an nVidia mainboard anyway.

Next extract the firefox plugin into the plugins directory. I created a new folder named Firefox.

{Optional}

If you own Paragon Partition Manager 9, you can download and use my plugin for it. (Please note; I did not write this plugin, but I did piece it together from several different plugins I found on the internet; plugins that either did not work correctly, or did not work at all)

Make sure it is installed in the default directory, and copy these two files into a folder pm9 in the plugin directory.

pm9.inf

pm9_nu2menu.xml

If you do not own it, I highly recommend it. It is worth the cost.

If you use a version other than 9, you will have to modify the .inf file.

Running BartPEBuilder

Now go into the pebuilder3110a folder and run pebuilder.exe.

Agree to the license (or else go do something else.)

Click no. I think we can all find the windows sources ourselves :)

Click on the browse button and find your windows cd. If you are not using a virtual cd, it would be a good idea to copy the files to your hard drive, and use that folder instead.

Next click on the plugins button.

The firefox plugin, and any other plugins you add should get enabled by default. When you click close, it will automatically check to make sure all the files specified in the infs are present. If there is a problem, you will need to correct it before proceeding.

Now click on build. Optionally, you can specify to create an iso to burn on disc, or test in a virtual machine.

It should only take a few minutes. If there are any errors you will have to go back and correct them before it will build an iso.

When it is done, you should have a new folder named BartPE. If you specified iso above, you will have a file named pebuilder.iso that you can burn or use in a VM.

Booting BartPE

When you boot from your new BartPE it will start off with the familiar NT style progress bar.

If you left PENETCFG enabled, it will start off with this after you boot. If you don't need internet, click no.

You are now at your fully functional, BartPE/WinPE desktop

You have some familiar tools like command prompt and Explorer-like file browser.

If you do run the network configurator, you need specify some options.

Most people will just use the default options.

Click Apply, and you should have internet.

If you installed Paragon Partition Manager, you can now non-destructively modify partitions on any system.

If you installed Firefox, you can even browse the internet while fixing computer problems!
