How to nLite your Windows Installation files

Go to http://www.vlite.net/download.html and obtain the latest Installer and install it.

You need to obtain the windows imaging api. At 1.3 gigabytes, the Windows Automated Installation Kit is a pretty hefty download for the three files from it that you need (shown below). You could probably search on the internet and find them. I would recommend downloading the kit though. It is very handy and has the the Windows PE files you need to build a Windows PE environment, and create a Vista recovery image.

Copy the three files to c:\Program Files\vLite. Then right click on wimfltr.inf and choose install.

{Optional}

If you wish to integrate any Service Packs, you will need to download the entire redisributable; SP1 link:

If you wish to integrate Internet Explorer 8, you will need to download the entire redistributable:

For any hotfixes, go to your control panel, go to Add/Remove Programs, and see what hotfixes you currently have. You can get the installers from download.microsoft.com by searching on the KB numbers.

To integrate IE8, you must extract the msu installer file from the exe. Right click on the IE8 exe file you downloaded and open it with WinRAR or 7zip.

Choose the ie8.msu and extract to a folder of your choice.

If you wish, you can download my session files that will have all the options specified in this guide. Copy them to c:\Program Files\vLite\Presets. Then when you run vlite, the below options will be selected. You can customize however you like from there, or just use my settings.

Last Session.ini

Last Session_u.ini

Run vLite

Browse to the folder where you copied your installation CD. If you have a retail version of Vista, it will ask which version of Vista you want to modify (Ultimate, Home etc.) Make sure you choose the version that your product key is for.

If you downloaded my session files, the below options will be selected.

Otherwise select which operations you want and click Next.

This is where you select hotfixes, or addons, like the IE8 addon shown below.

On the hotfixes tab, click insert, then browse to the hotfix or addon file.

After you select your addons and hotfixes, click the drivers tab.

This is where you specify drivers to integrate. This is completely optional.

Click on insert. If there is only one driver in the folder, choose single driver. If you have all your drivers in one folder (or your driver has multiple infs), choose multiple driver folder. Don't worry if your driver has more than one inf, windows setup will choose the correct one.

Click next when you have added all your drivers.

The next step is removing components. This is where you start slimming down your installation. This screen will prevent from you removing components that are part of the below features.

If you used my session ini, you will see which components I have removed. I remove all the drivers, and languages. Hardware support and network, I pretty much leave alone. The rest is at your discretion. You can safely remove Manual Install and Upgrade.

Some optional tweaks.

Next is unattended. If you use my session ini, after you specify the partition to install windows to the rest of the setup is completely unattended. You should obviously change all personal info to your own.

Make sure you set the localizations in the Regional tab, or else windows setup will pause and wait for you to supply the answers.

If your installation DVD is OEM, then you will have only the options below. Choose Rebuild one.

If you have a retail DVD, then you will have the option of Rebuild One, with the version you selected at the beginning, or the option of rebuilding all the versions of Vista (Ultimate, Business, Home, etc.) To save space, you should select Rebuild One.

Finally it will apply all the changes. Depending on how fast your computer is, it should not take more than 20 minutes or so.

You can then save it to ISO, or burn to a disc. If you are planning on USB, then you don't need to do either.

I am not sure why, but vLite leaves the langpacks folder in place. This is 800mb of data that is not going to be used if you install the default language (English).

You can delete this folder, and your vLite source is complete.
